Project Officer in Aquaculture “i4Ag”

The project “Improved water cycle systems for sustainable fisheries production in aquaculture” (i4Ag) (2020-2026) is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It aims to test innovations that have the potential to make local shrimp value chains more efficient and sustainable in order to increase incomes, secure jobs and improve environmental sustainability. The project is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The project is looking for a local qualified candidate to fill the following position:

Project Officer in Aquaculture“i4Ag”

Duty Station: Can Tho Office, Viet Nam

Duration: ASAP until 31 December 2025 with possible extension

Responsibilities:

  • Focal point to work with relevant DARD’s departments, private sector, academia,district and communes for implementation of the projects
  • Coordinating implementation of the technical components of i4Ag projects in the Mekong Delta.
  • Providing technical support for integration of aquaculture related issues to other GIZ projects in the Mekong Delta.
  • Maintaining a good flow of communication and information between all involved stakeholders

Main tasks:

  • Provide highest-quality technical advice on innovations and technologies for water quality improvement and disease issues in shrimp production to immediate partners;
  • Perform a variety of tasks as are required for pilot models under the project, especially applying environment additives in shrimp farming practices; RAS facilities and operations in shrimp production; disease prevention;
  • Work with private sector to implement project solutions on aquaculture innovations.
  • Work closely with Evonik and Can Tho University to facilitate practical testing the “active oxygen” solutions inRAS shrimp farms 
  • Ensure all information and data records for the monitoring and evaluation of the project 
  • Develop and implement creative approaches to strengthen the capacities of key stakeholders on adopted innovations and technologies (trainings, workshops and upscaling plan and others)
  • Provide technical support per request for other activities of the project (mangrove-shrimp and hatchery) and review of project activities and studies, etc
  • Develop terms of reference and recruit short-term service providers
  • Builds a network to relevant stakeholders, partners and the project team;
  • Provide support for implementing project activities at field level
  • Maintain a good flow of communication and information between all involved stakeholders
  • Provide other support if required

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degree in aquaculture, biotechnology, environment science or very relevant fields of study
  • At least 10 years practical experience in aquaculture, at least 5 years professional working experience in a similar position.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of shrimp technology of RAS, solid waste and wastewater treatment
  • Practical knowledge on aquatic environment and shrimp health issues
  • Experience in working for international organizations, private sector and local authorities.
  • Experience in executive functions in private & public sector
  • Strong experience working in the Mekong Delta
  • Experience in working in a large team and strong skills in team work
  • Knowledgeable on impact of climate change, smart aquaculture, sustainable use of natural resources at community level, coastal ecosystems
  • Very strong knowledge of technologies and innovation in aquaculture and quantitative analysis tools are an important asset
  • Practical knowledge of international and national standards on aquaculture and quality standards would be an asset
  • Very good skills in English language, in speaking, reading and report writing and MS Office
