About 90% of deforestation is caused by the expansion of agriculture – also in Southeast Asia. Therefore, the EU has adopted the EU regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR). According to the regulation, companies that place relevant products on the EU market or export them must ensure through due diligence that they are produced legally and without the conversion or degradation of forests after 2020. The new EU regulation affects Southeast Asian countries because they export relevant commodities such as palm oil, rubber, coffee, and timber to the EU market. Some governments have voiced concerns about the EU-regulation. Also, awareness about the opportunities of the EUDR for stakeholders could be increased.
The EU COM and BMZ have commissioned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to support the EU delegations to enhance the understanding for and alleviate concerns about the EUDR in Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, in particular on its core elements (i.e. mandatory due diligence rules, traceability, benchmarking), and on the EU’s flanking measures to create an enabling environment for compliance by operators.
The project is referred to as Engagement with Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam to raise awareness on and to promote better understanding of the EU approach to reducing EU-driven deforestation and forest degradation (EUDR Engagement). It is implemented in Viet Nam during the entire timeframe of 24 months
